IELTS Writing

The IELTS Writing section checks your English writing abilities. This test assesses your ability to write correct and coherent English sentences without making any spelling mistakes or contextual errors. Also, it checks your ability to express your ideas and information clearly and concisely while writing. The Writing section is of two types: IELTS Academic Writing and IELTS General Training Writing.

This test is suitable for those applicants who want to study in an English-speaking country. The topics covered in this test are related to situations or experiences encountered while pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

The whole writing section is of 60 minutes. It is recommended not to spend more than 20 minutes in the writing task 1. However, the division of time between the two tasks is completely up to you. You are supposed to write at least 150 words. Task 1 of writing is worth about 33% of your total marks.

You will be marked on:

  • Coherence & cohesion.
  • Vocabulary.
  • Grammar.

It is recommended to not spend more than 40 minutes on writing task 2. You are supposed to write more than 250 words in this section. writing task 2 is worth 66% of your total marks. You will be marked on the same aspects as in writing task 1.

IELTS General Training writing is suitable for people who want to work or reside in English speaking countries. In IELTS general training writing, two writing jobs must be accomplished in 60 minutes. Task 1 allows test-takers to write on a situation, for example, writing a letter for requesting information or explaining a situation. In Task 2, test takers write an essay describing a situation, argument or query. Answers must be written in the response booklet in its entirety. Notes or bullet points are not as acceptable as answers.

How long is the writing exam for IELTS?

This test takes approximate 1 hour in total. It is recommended that you spend 20minutes on writing task 1 and 40 minutes on writing task 2.
