IELTS Reading

The Reading section of the IELTS exam tests your ability to read and comprehend passages written in English. The test consists of a total of 40 questions. The test assesses your entire range of reading abilities. The abilities tested will include understanding the main idea, context, logical argument and recognising writers’ purpose of writing. The IELTS Reading section is of two types- IELTS Academic Reading and IELTS General Training Reading.

In IELTS Academic Reading, the candidate has to read and comprehend three different reading passages. Also, the candidate has to answer a total of 40 questions within the time duration of 60 minutes. Each question carries one mark. The questions can be of the following types-

  • Identifying the writer’s views
  • Sentence completion
  • Completing the summary
  • Matching information
  • Matching headings

The paragraphs in the test are selected from English journals, magazines, books, and newspapers. All the paragraphs are written in general and easy-to-understand English.  If sometimes, the text includes technical terms, then a separate glossary will be provided. The IELTS Academic reading test passages will be related to people willing to pursue higher education in English speaking countries. The candidates will be required to write down their answers onto the answer sheet within 60 minutes. No extra time will be allotted for writing the answers.

The IELTS General training Reading consists of a total of 40 questions to be completed within 60 minutes. This section is further divided into three parts-

  • Section 1 consists of two or three short paragraphs. These texts are basic texts for obtaining and giving information related to day-to-day tasks & factual information like timetables, notices, and commercials.
  • Section 2 consists of two paragraphs of medium length. The paragraphs used are related to the scope of Workplace or office like contracts, presentations, job descriptions, and training materials.

Section 3 consists of one long paragraph related to general reading. The emphasis is more related tothe descriptive structure of English. The paragraph used here can be from magazines or newspapers.

Mapping out your ideas and organizing them will help you. If a candidate organizes his or her ideas thoroughly, then writing correctly & coherently will be easier.

Manage Your Time

Completing the IELTS Essay Writing test on time is critical.Therefore, before you appear for the IELTS Test, you must learn to properly manage your time.

Use Formal Language

Use of informal words and short-hand messages is not considered to be good in IELTS exam. To score well, use proper and formal language in the IELTS exam.

IELTS Reading FAQs

Is it necessary to write correct spellings?
Yes, it is essential. If the answers are incorrectly spelled, it will be wrongly marked, and you will lose marks. So be careful about your spellings of long academic words.
Can I write in capital letters in all my answers?
Yes, you can do that. This is a good idea sometimes because your writing is usually going to be easier to read.
Can I write or make notes on the reading question paper?
Yes, you can make notes and write on any part of the question paper. Only your answer sheet will be marked. It is beneficial to make notes on your question paper as they can help you to locate answers.
Should I use a pen or a pencil?
You have to use a pencil for your reading and listening test. So don’t forget to bring an eraser with you. Although you can choose either a pen or pencil to write.
Do I need to write my answers directly on the answer sheet?
You should not write your answers directly on the answer sheet once you find them in IELTS reading. It is recommended to first think about your answers and write only when you are sure about them.
