IELTS Listening

The IELTS Listening part tests your ability to understand spoken English and how easily you comprehend main ideas and factual information from the recordings you listen. All recordings are in English language. Also, it checks your ability to assess the speaker’s opinions and attitude while they speak in English. Once you listen to the recordings in English, you will have to answer a certain set of questions.

Listening Test format of IELTS exam

The IELTS listening test lasts for a total of 40 minutes. You will hear the recordings for 30 minutes and then you will get 10 minutes to write your answers in the response sheet. Each question is of 1 mark. Do make sure to carefully write down your answers in the answer sheet, without any spelling mistakes. Take out 1-2 minutes of your time to check your answers. If you spell the words incorrectly, then your marks will be deducted.

There will be a word limit for each question in the IELTS Listening test. You need to pay close attention to the word limit and how it is different for different set of questions. You will have time to read the questions before the recording starts.

The recordings will be played only once. The recordings will be of four types. In the first two parts of the recordings, there will be conversation of people related to everyday context or day-to-day situations. In the remaining two parts of the recordings, there will be conversations related to academic or training context.

Do not loose attention

You will hear the recordings only once. So, it is quite essential that you listen to the recordings with full attention and concentration.

Listen Carefully

Listen to words-indicators quite carefully as they will help you to anticipate what the speaker is going to say and understand the speaker’s ideas.

IELTS Listening FAQs

Before I listen, will I have time to read the questions?
Yes, you will be given some time to look over the questions before the recording begins. Do use this time wisely. Read the questions, highlight keywords, and think about any paraphrases you might hear.
Can I use brackets for my answers, for e.g., student(s)?
No, you can’t use brackets for answers. IELTS candidates must choose one answer only. Always write words with correct spellings.
Does everyone take the same test, or is there a different listening test?
Everyone has only one listening exam. There is no separate listening exam for anyone.
Can I have extra paper for making notes?
No, you will not get any extra paper for making notes. However, you can write on the question paper while listening.
If I write NorthRoad instead of North Road, Will my answer still be correct?
No, your answer will be wrong. If there are two separate words in the answer, you have to write them separately.
