IELTS Speaking

IELTS Speaking is a section of shortest duration in the IELTS exam. It is a test which evaluates or tests your spoken English and how well you speak and express your ideas. Each and every speaking section in this test is recorded. In this test, you will be speaking on a topic for some duration of time, without any interruptions or prompts by the examiner. You will be judged on how proficiently you speak English without any grammatical or pronunciation errors.

Speaking Test format of IELTS exam

There are three components in the speaking section: two structured interviews and one short speech. It takes approximately 11 to 14 minutes and each portion is recorded.

Speaking Part 1

The examiner asks you basic questions about yourself and many other familiar subjects, like home, family, work studies, and interests. This section is of of 4 to 5 minutes of duration.

Speaking Part 2

A cue card will be given to you & you will be asked to talk about the specific topic written on the cue card. Until you talk, you will have 1 minute to prepare about what you are going to speak. After you complete this part of the test, the examiner will then ask one or two questions on the same topic.

Speaking Part 3

More questions related to the topic will be asked in this part. Such questions will encourage you to express and discuss more abstract ideas and issues. This part of the test takes 4 to 5 minutes to complete.

Be Loud And Clear

Speak clearly and loudly so that what you speak is clear to the examiner. Do keep in mind that you do not seem like shouting to the examiner. While speaking, add small pauses between words.

Do make sure to pronounce words correctly. Don’t worry about your accent; just make sure that you speak English clearly and express your ideas clearly.

Use Grammatically Correct Sentences

Always make sure that you speak grammatically correct sentences. Speaking grammatically incorrect sentences will lead to deduction in marks.

Use Right Words

Do remember that you are also marked onto the type of vocabulary you use. Use correct and relevant words while speaking. Practice daily to improve your speaking skills.

IELTS Speaking FAQs

How many parts are there for the speaking test?
Speaking test contains three parts. There’s an interviewer, a talk and discussion with the examiner.
Which types of questions will be asked in the speaking test?
There are different types of topics for each part of the speaking test.
Can I give examples in my answers?
Yes, it’s very useful to do that, especially if you need to give longer and more detailed answers in Part 3.
What kind of clothes should I wear in my speaking test?
Yes, you can wear anything you like. It is not a formal interview. It is just an informal speaking test. You can wear those clothes in which you feel more comfortable. Even take an extra layer if I scold it.
What should I do if I couldn’t listen the question properly?
In speaking test part 1, you should ask the examiner to repeat the question, but the examiner can’t explain or help you. In part 2 of the speaking test, Examiner is going to give you a topic and you can’t change it. You can politely ask the examiner to repeat the question, if you could not hear it properly.
